Yay, I’ve just been accepted into and And since I have this whole “Naruto knowitallism” thing going throughout my recent journal entries, I’ve decided to finish writitng this journal entry, which is totally devoted to Kankurou and his greatness . Since I had some of this already written out I’m going to have to leave my rant about Jet Link until next time . That’s what happens when you’re accepted into 2 fanclubs in 1 day. It’s a good thing . Anyway…ahead we charge!!!

And now for some info about his character design, (in terms of appearance and general manner) I’ll keep it short because it’s annoying to read too much at once. At least if you’re lazy like me it is

Kankurou’s clothing and face paint is based on the costumes commonly worn by kabuki actors. Kabuki is a kind of traditional Japanese theatre which is very stylistic, and is well known for its distinct style. One of the features of kabuki theatre that makes it so well known is the face paint worn by the actors. Coloured paint is worn in a way that enhances or exaggerates facial lines for a dramatic effect.

The colour of the paint is determined by the character’s personality. Red is used to indicate positive traits, such as righteousness or heroism, whereas blue or black indicates negative traits, such as villainy (I love the word villainy don’t you? ) or jealousy. Green symbolizes the supernatural, and purple symbolizes nobility. Kankurou probably wears purple paint because his father was the 4th Kasekage, and maybe also because Gaara is the current Kasegage.

Almost everything about Kankurou is based on kabuki theatre, like his name, (some famous kabuki actors and a famous ninja were named Kankurou) and his manner of speech (in the Japanese version). His clothing is also alike to kabuki theatre, which, like the face paint serves to enhance or exaggerate his features. His baggy clothes make him look fat, but if you have read chapters 251-255 of the manga you will know he is not fat at all, the points on his hood are there for the same purpose: dramatic effect. They tend to just make him look like a cat or bat. But that’s OK; he’s really cute when he’s drawn as a cat, so please nobody stop with the kitty-kanky fanart !

Anyway, the only thing about Kankurou that links him to ninjas (I mean apart from the fact that is IS a ninja, and everyone who is related to him is a ninja ) is the name of his first puppet- Karasu. The famous ninja that shares Kankurou’s name is often pictured with a crow, and Karasu is the word for crow in Japanese.
